State Legislative Roundup for March 8, 2024

Following up on our previous legislative roundup from February 22nd, here's a breakdown of the latest developments in state legislation that could impact ecommerce marketing.

  • Maryland House Bill 53 (Ecommerce Platform Task Force): No updates since February 21st. The bill, which proposes a task force to investigate large e-commerce platforms, remains pending in the Maryland Senate.

  • Missouri House Bill 2603 (Caller ID Anti-Spoofing Act): This bill, which would criminalize caller ID spoofing and allow recipients to sue for damages, hasn't seen any movement since February 22nd. It awaits a full vote by the Missouri House.

  • New Jersey Senate Bill 1237 (Caller ID Transmission): No updates since February 12th. The bill, which requires telemarketers to transmit accurate caller ID information, is still before the New Jersey Assembly's Consumer Affairs Committee.

    Assembly Bill 2635 (Caller ID Transmission): This Assembly version of the Caller ID bill, which has the same goal as Senate Bill 1237, also hasn't seen any movement since February 9th.

  • Tennessee House Bill 2504 (Misleading Caller ID): No updates on this bill, which aims to prevent debt collectors and inbound telemarketers from using misleading caller ID information.

    Senate Bill 2410 (Misleading Caller ID): This bill, which also targets misleading caller ID by debt collectors and inbound telemarketers like House Bill 2504, is gaining traction! On March 5th, it was recommended for passage with amendments and referred to the Calendar & Rules Committee. Additionally, it was placed on the Commerce Committee calendar for March 5th, with action deferred to the same date. This suggests potential movement in the coming weeks.

  • West Virginia House Bill 5251 (West Virginia TCPA): This comprehensive consumer protection bill for West Virginians hasn't seen any updates since February 13th. It remains in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
